Brian McKelvey

Guiding Light Grant Recipient 2025

Breakaway From Cancer is proud to announce that Brian McKelvey is the seventh of the 2025 Recipients of Breakaway From Cancer’s “Guiding Light” Award.

Brian’s “𝒮𝓉𝑜𝓇𝓎”.

Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Brian McKelvey has lived out those words with quiet strength and steadfast devotion—as a writer, horse trainer, ranch-hand, husband, father, and servant of God. Alongside his wife, Rachel, and their children, Jesse and Lydia, Brian treasures the simple joys of life outdoors, whether gathering cattle or riding together beneath the glow of a southwestern sunset.

In their Arizona community, Brian has long been a steady presence—always ready to lend a hand and radiate kindness. His friendly, outgoing spirit and positive outlook draw people near, leaving an imprint of encouragement wherever he goes. That spirit was tested in November 2024, when a sudden headache after church quickly escalated into seizures and a devastating diagnosis: Glioblastoma, a fast-growing brain tumor. Since then, Brian has endured surgeries, radiation, multiple rounds of chemotherapy, and ongoing physical and cognitive challenges.

Now, he stands at the threshold of potential experimental trials, continuing to face each day with courage. Yet through every trial, God has sustained Brian and his family. The McKelveys hold fast to the truth that He has a plan for their lives. And as long as they are here, they will continue to honor Him—living testimonies of faith, perseverance, and love.
