Kristen "Kris" Secor
Guiding Light Grant Recipient 2025
Breakaway From Cancer is proud to announce that Kristen "Kris" Secor is the sixth of the 2025 Recipients of Breakaway From Cancer’s “Guiding Light” Award.
Kris’ “𝒮𝓉𝑜𝓇𝓎”.
Rodney Atkins once sang, “But the good news is there's angels everywhere out on the street. Holdin' out a hand to pull you back up on your feet.” For so many, that angel has a name: Kristen (“Kris”) Secor.
Kris has spent her life being the steady hand, the gentle voice, and the fierce advocate for those who needed someone to believe in them. Driven by her lifelong passion for horses, she poured her heart into building Cowgirl Connections LLC. In this place, people can grow their horsemanship skills and find healing through equine-assisted therapy. It has become a sanctuary where horses help people heal, grow, and rediscover their strength.
In addition, over the past several years, she devoted countless hours to guiding individuals through the hardest chapters of their lives in an inpatient program for behavioral and mental health. To everyone who knows her, Kris is more than a mentor—she is compassion embodied, honesty spoken with love, and kindness that never wavers. She is the one who lifts you up, dusts you off, and reminds you that you are never alone.
But life tested Kris in ways she never expected. When severe fatigue and troubling symptoms led her to the doctor ten years ago, she received a rare and daunting diagnosis: Polycythemia Vera, a blood cancer. Though she faced treatment with courage and determination over the years, the disease progressed to Myelofibrosis, ultimately requiring a recent bone marrow transplant.
And yet—true to who she is—Kris’s spirit remains unbroken. Even as she continues to heal away from the precious farm that she refers to as “the most peaceful place,” her heart is already reaching outward, eager to return to the life she loves: helping others who are “Goin’ Through Hell” or simply need a friend to lean on.
Kris’s journey is a reminder that angels don’t always wear wings. Sometimes they wear boots, walk beside horses, and meet you exactly where you are. She has been that angel for so many. Now, it is our turn to be hers—lifting her up with the same love and strength she has given freely to others.
